Dr. Fabian Burkart

Lawyer and Notary, LL.M., Partner

Born in Basel in 1969, married, one daughter
Studied law at the University of Basel and the University of Lausanne (licentiate of both laws)
Master of Laws (LLM) at the London School of Economics and Political Science in 1994
Admitted to the bar in 1997
Doctoral dissertation in 1999
Appointed as a notary in 2005

After completing his studies in Basel, Lausanne and London, Dr Fabian Burkart entered the legal profession, working for two years at Pestalozzi Gmür und Patry (now Pestalozzi Rechtsanwälte AG) in Zurich, during which time he was admitted to the bar. The experience he gained in this role motivated him to write a dissertation on international sale of goods law, which he worked on while undertaking a three-year research assistant position at the Faculty of Law of the University of Basel under Prof. Ernst A. Kramer. In 2000, he joined the firm Gloor & Christ (now VISCHER AG), where he gained several years of mergers and acquisitions experience, before training to become a notary and being appointed as a notary for the canton of Basel-Stadt in 2005.

This path led to Fabian Burkart's current advisory activities across all notarial areas (corporate law, real estate law as well as matrimonial property and inheritance law). He disposes of a rich experience in construction and planning law, at the interface between legal advice for builders and contractors, public construction law (planning, zoning changes, usage plans, etc.) and land registry processes for the implementation of medium-sized and large real estate projects.

Since working independently, Fabian Burkart has steadily built up a client base consisting mainly of SMEs. Acknowledging the importance of succession planning in any long-term SME business plan, he draws on his in-depth knowledge of inheritance law to provide comprehensive advice to his clients.

In addition to his professional qualifications, Fabian Burkart has a service-oriented approach and a talent for finding solutions that meet the individual needs of his clients, including out-of-the-ordinary approaches.

Fabian Burkart is fascinated by how answers to the same question can vary according to the social or geographical context in which it is posed. He actively explores this issue in areas far removed from his professional activities and the law, including culture, development aid and medical research. He is also a passionate traveller and very interested in languages.
