Lawyer, Partner

Born in Basel in 1969
Studied law at the University of Basel (licentiate of both laws)
Admitted to the bar in 1997

Dr Michael Kull was a partner at a Basel-based civil and business law firm before joining Gabriel Nigon and other partners in 2004 to form Nigon Kull & Partners in its Marktplatz location, and the firm continued to grow as it changed its name to nigon Rechtsanwälte | Notariat in 2016.

Dr Michael Kull works predominantly in the fields of distribution law and labour law (and also particularly in the area of recruitment and hiring). In these areas, he advises both legal entities and natural persons, and also represents his clients in court. He has also focused on family and marriage law throughout his legal career.

Recognised as an expert thanks to a range of publications, Dr Michael Kull is a supporting member of the Swiss Franchise Association and was also a member of an expert committee on pre-contractual disclosure obligations for the same association. He is a member of the International Franchise Lawyers Association (IFLA) and also serves on the Board of Editors of the ZVertriebsR distribution law journal, to which he regularly contributes. He provides legal advice, assistance and representation to both franchisors and franchisees and is involved in drafting and amendment of contracts for various systems of distribution, as well as in legal issues associated with growth.

He also advises and represents companies of all sizes in all aspects of labour law. One of his particular specialities is the Recruitment and Hiring of Services Act, for which he provided commentary in the Stämpfli series as editor and commentator in 2014.

Throughout his legal career he has also focused on marriage law, particularly maintenance law, matrimonial property and parent and child law for married couples, as well as legal issues relating to co-habiting couples.

In line with his business focus, he also regularly handles cases in the field of commercial criminal law, representing claimants or acting as defence counsel.

Michael Kull is a keen mountaineer and ice climber and can regularly be found high in the Alps. He is joined and guided by top mountaineer Dani Arnold (speed record holder for the north face of the Matterhorn and the Cassin route of Piz Badile) and enjoys this counterbalance to his legal work. He combines the two in serving as the association lawyer for the Basel chapter of the Swiss Alpine Club. His regular hobbies include climbing, mountain biking and strength training which provide the basis for his activities in the mountains and on icefalls.
